Stupid Myths #1

June 21, 2009 by logancgraham

I was looking at various myths and urban legends today, and I found that quite a few of them were very weird and wacky. So weird and wacky, in fact, that they were almost blatantly false. Here’s one, to be followed shortly.

The St. Peter’s Church Incident, Riga, Latvia

It is reported that one day in 1667, the church (which had been destroyed and re-constructed many times) had just finished re-construction, when the workers decided to drop a glass from the top of the church to the ground. The number of the pieces the glass shattered into was supposed to indicate the number of years the church would stand until the subsequent destruction. It is said that the glass (unfortunately) landed on a straw, and remained intact. The next year, the church burned down. Coincidence?
My Thoughts: I do applaud the workers for gaining the inspiration of dropping the glass. I found that amusing. When the church did in fact burn down in the number of years the number of pieces the church "shattered" into, the workers must have received quite a fright. However, I find it highly improbable that the glass would land on a straw, and survive nonetheless. I thought this myth was pretty funny.

Why Bing Is Better Than Google

June 20, 2009 by logancgraham

Bing: Microsoft’s new attempt at a search engine.

The Cons: Made by Microsoft, not very user friendly/modern looking.

Why I Like It Better Than Google: Shorter name/address to type in.

Then again…

Bing Sucks...?

9 FREE Ways to Gain 10+ GB On Your MacBook

June 20, 2009 by logancgraham

Here’s a list of things that I either did or downloaded to free up almost 11 gb of space on my Macbook 10.5.7 hardrive.

1) Software Update – Always update your software regularly. For most Mac users, the Software Update application will pop up regularly. Don’t ignore it; I know I almost always used to. My comp. has sucked until now.

2) OpenOffice.org – a completely free, open source, very fast Mac alternative to Microsoft office. Includes everything (a Word alt, a Powerpoint alt, an Excel alt, plus a drawer, database screwer-wither, and even a math app). COMPLETELY FREE, AND EVEN BETTER THAN MS OFFICE.

3) Monolingual – a free app that deletes all language files that you dont need (you choose), and architectures (previous mac build settings). VERY HELPFUL.

4) Disc Inventory X – A free app that visually shows you what is taking up your hardrive. Download it. Now.

5) XSlimmer – a free (trial) app that slims down your apps. Can save you many GB’s in one go.

6) Delete the items in your Downloads folder – Do it. I had so much stuff that were copies of what I already had.

7) When deleting applications, AppTrap – A free app that, when you drag an app to your trash, will ask you if you want to delete the system files associated with it. Helps a bunch. Download it.

8) Archive & Delete old files – I had many files that were years old and totally unnecessary.

9) iStat Menus – Can show you many different options, but to do with hard drive space, will show you % and current figures. Useful for monitoring.

Bonus: Conserve Battery – Change display colours to thousands, and dim your screen.

Bonus: Keep yer Mac Cool – Download smcFanControl – controls fan speed.

*The Meteor-ical Kid

June 15, 2009 by logancgraham

A German kid said he was struck in the hand by a meteorite. It was supposedly travelling at 30,000 miles an hour. That’s damn cool.

*Microsoft Donates 8 Meals for every IE8 Download

June 15, 2009 by logancgraham

This Just In: Microsoft has announced that it will be donating 8 meals to the Feeding America Network for each *completed* download of Internet Explorer 8. Wow, 24 meals donated to far. What would happen if I download only half of it? 4 meals?

But then again, if you don’t download it, it’s implied that you’re a douchebag. Thank you, Microsoft.

First REAL Post – Top 10 of my Mac Apps (FREE)

June 14, 2009 by logancgraham

Here we go, the top 10 of my (free) Mac apps… or just my favourite.

10. Cyberduck – A very easy to use FTP program. It’s free! Sometimes there can be some problems (i’m new at this FTP stuff), but they are easy to solve. Sometimes web hosts have Cyberduck presets, even, which allow you to download them and open them; they open Cyberduck, entering all the right information. Very Helpful.

9. Front Row – A native Mac app that comes with your Mac, it’s very fun to use. It’s essentially a theatre for your iTunes library and iPhoto library. If your mac came with a remote, one uses it to control Front row.

8. Stickies – Another native Mac app that is bundled in with your Mac. Very quick to open, and use; very useful in remembering things. Think of a very limited word processor. They can be selected to hover in the foreground, and are very flexible. I like the plain quickness; it doesn’t take forever to open (it opens almost right away), close, or alter the settings.

7. Dictionary – Yes… another native Mac app bundled in. I just recently discovered this. It’s very useful, and doesn’t require the internet (save for a Wikipedia feature). I’m a word hound, and just finding this thing made me happy.

6. Skype – Of course! I had some friends that went to china, and it was really fun talking to them. The latency is almost zero. Finding people on the network is very easy.

5. NewsFire – Just found out about RSS feeds today, and NewsFire (which I have just downloaded makes reading them easy. It stores the feeds you add, and they are presented in a very modern, clean manner.

4. Qumana – I’m writing this post on Qumana right now; it’s a powerful and free blogging app for all systems. I had little to no trouble setting this up. It can either be viewed from a WYSIWYG way, or an HTML source way.

3. Thunderbird – A free mail application from Mozilla. Unfortunately, I cannot compare it to the Mail.app; I threw Mail.app away as soon as I got Thunderbird. Multiple accounts. Streamlined use. Multi-email-type functionality. Great.

2. Serato Scratch Live – Being a DJ, this software is great. It comes from Rane itself; it’s a music player, that is functional with the Serato Scratch Live hardware (a digital-vinyl system). Free download, constantly updated. Easy to use.

AND NUMBER 1 – Darnit… I should have planned this out. I don’t have one!

Honourable Mentions: TubeTV, iTunes, Beatport Sync, Frostwire, NVU.

Hey guys, this is my first post, off Qumana (a really easy-to-use blog editor). I finally got it working after a bit of research (silly Qumana fault with WordPress). I’m in the process of finding helpful apps to use… but this blog will be my ramblings (they’re very good).
